House of champagne cultivated in biodynamics, supported by Leonardo DiCaprio
Telmont, founded in 1912 by Henri Lhôpital, is a family house of champagne in which Bertrand Lhôpital, cellar and winegrowing master, represents the fourth generation. From 2021, it received the bio certification for 72 % of its wine estate. Its cuvée Réserve de la terre, is elaborated solely from organically-grown grapes, herbicide, synthetic pesticides, fungicides and chemical fertilisers free.
Five main objectives have been settled in 2021 and marked the path to the 100 % bio. The first step it to preserve the terroir by promoting biodiversity in the whole wine estate, either in the vineyards and in the nearby natural areas. Partner winemakers are accompanied towards organic viticulture.
The second aim focused on the flagon, which has been completely redesigned. Boxes and packagings have been removed. From now on, bottles will be green, made of 85 % of recycled glass, which is 100 % recyclable. To reuse them for other beverages has been tried as an experimental approach in 2021. A bottle of 835 grams instead of the usual 900 grams, has been designed and will be sold from 2026.
The third step focused on renewable or green energy supply to meet all the needs through an optimal sourcing, the installation of equipment to generate solar power and the consistent use of electric vehicles. At the next step, the whole inbound and outbound supply chain has been rethought to mitigate the emissions of greenhouse gases that might be indirectly related to the activity. The Maison prohibits air carriers for its expeditions.
The last aim focused on information and traceability. Since 2021, every bottle is labelled with its number, the winemaking information and the composition of the champagne, for full transparency.
In 2022, Leonardo DiCaprio entered to the capital, confirming the full environmental shift taken by the champagne producer. Ludovic du Plessis, CEO of Telmont, gladly acknoledges that meeting the committed actor 20 years ago has been decisive in his sustainability approach.
